great black and white

OK - it's been too long since I've added much here.
I just ran across this article though, and it's really worth checking out. It goes into detail about 2 different ways to move from a color image to a black and white image. They don't even mention levels!

I have known about the 'don't go grayscale' to be black and white... but I hadn't realized there were a couple of ways to get from here to there. I'm a fan of the channel mixer idea myself.
In the past I'd just used one of the red green or blue channels and called it a day, but hadn't realized you could blend the 3 together to get a different grey scaled image. (truth told I'd then run one of the channels through levels or curves for some different looks - but I could probably still do that using the channel mixer idea!)

Perhaps I should turn some of my color images B&W -- just for fun of it.

Guess I got to start shooting some more!
I've decided to go back to Moab, and grab more shots there, and I think I'll buy myself a new camera to go there with.

Why not?!

tiny

A little abstract - but nonetheless I think it holds up on it's own as a quality picture.

whoops

forgot all about posting a pic last night.
Life got confusing dealing with mice running through the apartment! They're cut little buggers - but they're not welcome to live in my place. Anyways - had to deal with that - managed to forget all about the picture.

Once again I'm reaching back a little bit to grab this one.
I took this in Las Vegas (I'm sure others have a similar shot) in the Belagio hotel.

color

I really liked the colors and fluid look of these lights - I hope this captures them appropriately.

Comments welcome.

motion again

Already I'm having trouble keeping up with the idea of one picture a day.
I haven't shot any photos in a while. So I'm kind of cheating and going back to the past a little bit.
Today's is from the walk home from the train to my apartment - once again - it's about the motion.

motion3

It's not the greatest - but I like the abstract-ness of it. :)

Perhaps I just like shapes.

night lights

Here's a different kind of motion. It's cars driving by, and the bright lights of stores, as you're running down the street trying to get somewhere quickly - - everything blurs, and changes into abstract shapes.

That's what we have here:

nightlight

"nightlight"
Again, comments are welcome.

let the madness begin

Let the photo madness begin.
I think from this point on out I'm going to try and post 1 picture per day.

I'm starting with this one, which is a tweaked one from the same series of walking around and trying to capture motion with a still camera. It's a subway exit into grand central terminal at rush hour. I like how iPhoto managed to really massage this picture into a whole deep and rich look. I'm quite impressed with iPhoto right now. It's a bit too simple sometimes, but it keeps me from having to fire up photoshop for just some simple levels adjustments and gamma shifting. My biggest gripe with photoshop right now is it's 'activation' scheme. I hate crap like this. In fact I hate it so much, I'm going back to CS1 without any second thoughts. I liked the 'bridge' software that they came out with... but I can't stand being assumed a software pirate. In fact - apparently I'm a 'casual pirate' because I use more than one computer and only purchase software for one of them. But after the joy of having a motherboard replaced by apple (free - thank you very much apple) and then being told by some of the software makers that I had bought software from that it was a 'second' computer, and I'd have to buy their software again, because it locked to the ethernet port... well. Let's just say I don't care so much about software company's rights to make profits at my expense.

But that's way too much bitching about software... back to the photos. Without further ado, I give you "exit2":

I welcome comments and suggestions.

getting closer

I know things move fast and move slow at the same time. I'm slow to get up my music mixes on line, I'm slow to get up my pictures online. Everything else around me moves at a speed accelerating every day. The older I get the less long the days seem. The shorter the nights are, the less patience I have for the need of my own sleeping.
Ecto, don't let me down now.
Post my picture, please.

movement1

If it works, it's from a series of pictures I was working on using intentional camera movement.
Obviously, this one is about the subject's movement. I liked the horizontal lines and the matching horizontal movement.
Maybe I should re-touch some of my pictures a bit more.
This one's a bit boring color wise... stay tuned. I'll do a movement2 at some point.

6flags

Yet another boring picture of six flags.

Perhaps if I make it so that you have to click the link to see the big picture... would that help?
can't we do any better yet?

the great american scream machine

It's the great american scream machine. I know you've been wondering what I've been up to with a whole week to myself... well - we decided to purchase a season pass to six flags and see what happens when you try to ride as many rides as possible.

As soon as I figure out a better way to post photos I will.
I've got tons of them.

hello from home

cup

Ended up walking right by this after going to Resfest tonight.

It was a sobering reminder of it all.
Hard to believe it was 3 years ago.

It's very easy to cry tonight.

ice ice baby

cup
Photo blog time.
Put a poland spring water in the freezer... just so it would cool down a bit more than in the fridge... it was perfect when it came out. Just enough liquid, just enough ice. It ended up with this sort of cup looking thing attached to the inside of the cap.
I wish I had a better camera - but there's something nice and lo-fi about the camera phone camera.

I call it "cup of dirt". Thanks Brian Regan for making me laugh more than I ever knew possible!

back to life

ouch!
well - time to get this thing back to life. Moved a hard-drive's image over to a new(er) computer - lost some prefs... got to get ecto back working again.

Something will happen soon. I can just feel it.
I'm hoping to spend more time being creative - and less time being frozen. I just picked up a fantastic book called Developing digital short films. It's been a great read so far - and in some ways has made me feel like I'm back in film school. I felt way more creative then. Perhaps it's just the advertising business that bums me out. No knocking JLH - I mean she's cute and all - and this was even fun to cut. But the politics involved... enough already. Shouldn't name names now should I?

So, for giggles I think I'll start posting some of my photoblogs. Starting today. Ouch, I say.

Well - now that's a post that can help get things kicked off now isn't it?
See you soon.
